Gitxsan West Secondary School

Gitwangak, BC

Gitxsan West Secondary School has been completed on a previously undeveloped site within the Gitwangak First Nation, approximately 52 km west of Hazelton, BC. The school is situated on Gitwangak Reserve No. 1.

This new, one-storey, 3,035 m2 secondary school includes 12 classrooms, a gymnasium, two mezzanines, and a resource room. The surrounding site features a sports field, ceremonial courtyard, gathering circle, greenhouse and garden area, and a parking lot, supporting both academic and cultural programming.

Constructed entirely from glulam wood, with locally sourced cedar cladding the exterior, the school was designed with sustainability, durability, and cultural significance in mind.

The completed school proudly features First Nations carvings and artwork throughout, including intricate Indigenous motifs embedded in the flooring. These striking black-and-white designs with bold, colorful accents highlight Gitxsan culture and storytelling, bringing a deep sense of identity, tradition, and pride to the heart of the learning environment.
